A cross-section of Nigerians has opposed the statement by President Muhammadu Buhari claiming that last year’s #EndSARS protests against police brutality were aimed at removing him from office.
Buhari made the statement while appearing on Arise TV on Thursday morning.
The President also blamed the protests on the dwindling inflow of foreign direct investment to the country.
His comments have since stirred reactions from Nigerians on social media who have countered his claims.
Most Nigerians say the #EndSARS protest was against injustice, police brutality and not an attempt by youths to overthrow Buhari’s government.
Here are some comments gathered by DAILY POST from Twitter;
@Ogbenodipo “ President Buhari, #EndSars wasn’t about removing you from office. It was a protest against police brutality and injustice. It was never about regime change.”
@Aproko_Doctor “ To some extent, I can see why he thought the #EndSARS protest was organized to remove him from office. They got into office on the back of staged protests, so to them, a protest is not the legitimate cry of people, it’s propaganda. That’s where we are as a country.”
@Adetolaov “ Young people all over your country, peacefully protested police brutality in #EndSARS . Entire world saw the genuine demand. But you who is in the same country, chose to wrongly mislabel it as a “regime change”. History will remember the wickedness to people just asking to live.”
@I_am_ilemona “ When President Buhari says #EndSARS was organized to remove him from office, does he mean that police brutality and human rights violations are perpetrated to keep him in office?
Arewa, Afenifere, PANDEF, Ohanaeze, others angry as presidency alleged there’s plot to “overthrow Buhari”
@Ayomusaobi “ Buhari order the killings of #EndSARS because he thought they wanted to overthrow him. As a coupist, the mindset is still there and that’s what he did to destroyed democratic government in 1983.”
@Maybeks “ He said #EndSARS people wanted to March to the Villa to remove him from office. In Buhari’s dictionary, protest against police brutality or bad governance does exist but he protested during GEJ. Self-centred hypocrite. It’s either his way or no other way.”
@Psalm862 “ If we have seen the presidential interview with AriseTV crew this morning, we will understand how the president thinks.And why the Lekki shootings happened without remorse. The president himself said #endsars protesters wanted to overthrow his government.”
@Libralord88 “ Lai Mohammed and Malami convinced him that it was against his government. It shows that Buhari is afraid of Nigerians.”
@Yinkuzjyde “ I thought I didn’t hear Buhari clearly. EndSARS was organized to remove him? How? This two years before 2023 is gonna be loooong. This man is a fully detached project.”
